Pleiotropic effects of vitamin D – a review of current studies

Nicola Szeja

Abstract

Vitamin D is traditionally connected with the mineralization of the human skeleton. It has been proven, however, that it has many other functions in the body. Identification of vitamin D receptor, responsible for the biological activity of vitamin D, and present in many tissues, allowed for confirmation of the pleiotropic, or multidirectional effects of the active form of vitamin D (calcitriol). This finding has contributed to the development of in vivo and in vitro studies on the impact of vitamin D deficiency on systems of the human body. These studies confirmed that very low levels of vitamin D in serum are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular, respiratory and immune disorders, or certain cancers. This is extremely important knowledge, mainly due to the fact that the vast majority of the population are exposed to a deficiency of this vitamin.
