Association between apical periodontitis and risk of cardiovascular diseases – a review of the literature

Abstract


The aim of the study was to present views on the correlation between apical periodontitis (AP) and the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) based on a review of the available literature. A review of PubMed for papers from the years 2011–2020 was conducted. Searched phrases included: apical periodontitis cardio-vascular diseases, apical periodontitis endothelial dysfunction, apical periodontitis myocardial infarction, endodontic lesion CVD. Based on the literature review, it is suspected that there is a positive correlation between AP and the risk of CVD. Further studies are required to examine the prognostic impact of the treatment of AP on CVD.
