The influence of environmental factors on snacking in preschool children

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Snacking can cause excessive energy intake while limiting the consumption of foods with high nutritional value. Snacking may have positive effects, provided that consumed products are recommended in children’s diets, including fruit, vegetables, yogurt and milk drinks.

The aim of the study was to assess selected environmental factors on the incidence and preferences of snacking in children of preschool age.

Materials and methods: The study was conducted among 104 parents of children aged 4–6 years attending kindergartens in rural and urban areas. The survey included questions about children’s eating behaviour, and characterizing the respondents. The nutritional status of children was assessed on the basis of the reference table of body mass index and International Obesity Task Force criteria. The statistical analysis was carried out using Statistica PL 12 software, and t-Student and Pearson χ2 tests.

Results: Fifty-five per cent of families lived in rural areas. Most women had higher education (52%), and most men secondary education (42%). The monthly income of ⅔ of the families was <1500 PLN/person. Two-thirds of the children had normal weight, and fewer than 25% were overweight. There was no correlation between nutritional status and place of residence, level of income/financial situation, education level of mothers, the time spent watching TV, as well as between the sexes. Snacking was declared in the case of 86 children. There was no association between the frequency of snacking and sex, nutritional status, place of residence, time watching TV, and declared financial situation. A significant impact was demonstrated in relation to the educational level of the mother and the income per household member. Products of choice were most often: fruits, sweets, salty snacks, vegetables; there was a significant impact of the level of mothers’ education on types of snacks.

Conclusions: Snacking between meals is a common nutritional behaviour among preschool children, and its existence may be affected by maternal education and income levels.
